A Catalyst
Sometimes there's a misconception that a catalyst "makes a reaction happen," as if a reaction would not otherwise happen without the presence of said catalyst. This is possible, with limitation; however, a catalyst cannot make an unfavorable reaction proceed. Rather, it can only speed up a reaction that is already moving in a favorable direction.
